Phonics Lesson Plans for Beginners When an ESL student first begins learning phonics, you need to remember that some of the sounds in the English alphabet are completely foreign to them. So they may have a hard time pronouncing the sounds. For instance, in Chinese there is really no l or m sound.

And students often have a hard time pronouncing these letters sounds. You must drill these regularly in the beginning. Also, always demand perfect pronunciation right from the beginning. If you dont, you are going to have a lot more problems later.

Especially when it comes time to teach your ESL students blends like sl and th.

Avoid later problems by teaching things right the first time. Begin by teaching your students short vowel sounds. Go through the entire alphabet until the students know the short vowel for every sound down pat.

Once youve achieved this, then move on to the long vowels sounds. Then to all of the blends and so on. But always teach the short vowel first! I had my own ESL cram schools in Taiwan for 10 years and tried every technique I could think of and actually tested them all in the classroom!
